The 1976 Champion
From 1976, this worksman "Martini" Porsche 935 turbo racing model was based on the 930 turbo and was developed in accordance with the FIA Group 5 rules. One of the FIA Group 5 rules was that competing vehicles must be based on production vehicles therefore getting the name as a Silhouette formula. Mounted in the rear was a flat-6 air-cooled 2875cc turbo charged motor which thumped out a massive 590hp. Furthermore, the suspension underwent extensive remodeling. The "Martini" won on debut the season opening race in March 1976, as well as the second round race. But with BMW winning the 3A4A5 rounds and threatening to run away with the series, Porsche fought back winning the final two races at the same time snatching the championship.

It first appeared at the first race of the 1977 F1 season in Argentina with its wedge-shaped body and inverted aircraft-like wings achieving a greater down force effect that considerably improved handling and performance. Not only did this new design reduced air drag, it adopted the idea that it would raise tire gripping power therefore allowing for harder and faster cornering. That year drivers Mario Andretti and Gunner Nilsson were at the helm of the new F1 Lotus racing car with Andretti winning the U.S. West, Spanish, French, and Italian GP's and Nilsson Gunner winning the Belgian GP. For the first half of the 1978 season, Lotus used their Type 78 which saw the revival of Team Lotus.
