With definitive Japanese rider Tadahiko Taira at the helm, the Yamaha YZR 500 (OW70) won the inaugural All-Japan 500cc Class Championship in 1983.

From its two-stroke engine with Yamaha's power valve system generating 140hp to its pioneering asymmetrical lightweight frame, this motorcycle was a platform for many innovative motorcycle technologies. Taira followed his 1983 triumph by successfully defending his title for the next two years, ensuring the YZR500 (OW70) a place in motorcycle racing history.
