Entering service in 1943 with the U.S. Navy, the F6F Hellcat, with its 2,000 horsepower engine and potent armament of 6 machine guns, gave American pilots the edge over Japanese fighters and helped turn the tide of the war. Over 12,000 Hellcats were produced and they shot down over 5,000 enemy planes during WWII.
